The Crusades


The crusades were religious military campaigns fought over several centuries in what is now the present day middle east 

During medieval England times the Muslims fought to conquer and keep Jerusalem and the christian world desired the same both for religious reasons.   

The crusades lasted nearly 200 years Jerusalem, was an important place to both the Muslims and Christians both Jesus Christ and Muhammad was said to resided there and the land was holy to both religions.


The official time periods for the crusades are 1096 ad to 1099; 1147 to 1149; 1189 to 1192; 1201 to 1204; 1218 to 1221; 1228 to1229; 1248 to 1254, and 1270.

There were 8 crusades in all


The armies of the crusades were made up of British and European knights .of the Medieval world. Christians of all social classes engaged in the crusades Richard the Lionhearted was one of the kings who did battle alongside knights and commoners to regain the Holy land from the Islamic world.

The popes of the times encouraged all Christians to recapture the Holy land from the Muslims. 


 The outcome of the crusades was a drawn Neither side was victorious; however economically trade increased and the reemergence in culture and learning flourished. Along with the Greek and Hebrew languages bringing about the Reformation and an end of the Dark Ages.
