Treatment Options For Bipolar Disorder

There is a lack of advances in new drug options for the treatment of Bipolar disorder and for the people who are affected it has been frustrating and disappointing. The current mood stabilizers available for those with manic depression are limited to Lithium and Depakote. These medications have are effective for many, however, there is a substantial group of those with bipolar disorder who have either not benefited from or experience side effects which are more than troublesome. Lithium and Depakote are better at treating mania than depression, and using antidepressants with these drugs has been known to trigger mania or rapid cycling. 

There are now drugs which were not intended to be used for Bipolar disorder but have been proven to help the vast majority of treatment resistant Bipolar disorder.

The type of medication used most often for bipolar disorder is the group known as anticonvulsants.These medications were used primarily for the treatment of epilepsy, several of these drugs have been effective in treating those with Bipolar disorder in helping stabilize mood.

Tegretol has shown an apparent effectiveness as a mood stabilizer. The most common side effects seen with Tegretol include dry mouth and throat, constipation, impaired urination, decreased sense of taste, dizziness, drowsiness, unsteadiness, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, indigestion, and diarrhea. Some individuals may also experience clumsiness, double vision, skin rash, and cardiovascular problems. There is the possibility of life threatening  effects as the inability to fight infection or prevent bleeding. Women who are pregnant or expecting pregnancy cannot utilize Tegretal. This medication has dangerous interactions with Prozac and Lithium.

It should not be taken with MAOI antidepressants or used by women who are or plan to nurse.

The drug Lamictal also helps to stabilize mood in those with bipolar disorder. The drug is reported to have more potent antidepressant effects than Tegretol or Depakote, and it has a low incidence of side effects such as weight gain and hair loss.  Lamictal can be taken with MAOIs, however, taking the drug with Tegretol may increase the chance of adverse side effects. Commonly the reported side effects are dizziness, headache, double vision, unsteadiness, nausea, blurred vision, sleepiness, rash, and vomiting. There have been cases reported of skin rashes which develop into the severe disorder or caused death. Lamictal used with Depakote concurrently increases the risk of developing a rash. 

Neurontin as a mood stabilizer for those with Bipolar disorder has been shown to be very effective. Like Lamictal, Neurontin has a lower incidence of side effects than Lithium and Depakote. As opposed to Neurontin work better in alleviating mania than depression. Neurontin can be used with MAOIs, lithium, Depakote, and Tegretol. Side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, unsteadiness, tremor, and double vision.  
 

Zyprexa, an antipsychotic has shown to be an effective anti-manic when used in with other medication. However, it causes excessive weight gain in some patients.
 

Topamax is another anticonvulsant that helps to regulate the mood.  It does not seem to cause weight gain; many individuals may actually lose weight. But Topamax may cause cognitive side effects more often than the other drugs. Other side effects include sleepiness, dizziness, vision problems, unsteadiness, speech problems, psychomotor slowing, nervousness, nausea, memory problems, tremor, and confusion. Topamax does not interact negatively with MAOIs, Lithium, Lamictal, or Neurontin. 

Seroquel is another atypical antipsychotic currently used in those with Bipolar disorder.

While all of the medications have proven effective in most people there is still a small minority of Bipolars who fail to find a total lack of symptoms from their disorder. Researchers are striving to find a drug which would prevent relapses in those who suffe4 from Bipolar disorder and the many other mental disorders that exist. For the newly diagnosed there is hope in finding the right medication with time and a little effort the cure for n Bipolar disorder may be closer than we think.
