The drug Ambien is an hypnotic medication prescribed by a doctor for sleep disturbances
When taken correctly it makes you relaxed, and sleepy. A prescription drug ,
Ambien is similar to benzodiazepines and is potentially dangerous. While there are many
people who take Ambien mostly for sleeping problems without any side effects it
can cause dependence when taken for a long period of time.
For severe insomnia people may be prescribed Ambien, and doctors usually discontinue it
after 30 days if there is not an improvement of the symptoms..
When you take Ambien you might experience residual effects the next day similar
to a hangover. You can have headaches, memory loss, nausea and drowsiness
for several hours in the morning after awakening.
Pparadoxical excitation occurs in some patients and they exhibit unusual behavior.
A person experiencing such behavior is not aware of their movements, and does not
know what happened until someone notices the behavior.
Serious side effects caused by Ambien is developing a tolerance to the medication.
If you use Ambien for more than 30 days, or take more of the prescribed dose you can
develop a higher tolerance to the drug. If you have an increased tolerance to Ambien,
you will need to increase your dosage to feel the same effects.
Another longterm effect of Ambien is a paradoxical response and causes insomnia
which is why the medication is prescribed for. Many people increase their doses a
s they become tolerant to the medication and can overdose. An overdose can cause
extreme drowsiness or loss of consciousness.
Ambien dependence occurs most often in those with a high tolerance to the drug,
but it can also affect those who take the medication regularly. Ambien changes your body’s
chemistry. Ambien addiction is caused most often because you take the drug every night
to fall asleep, but you can also if you increase your dosage without your doctor’s authorization.
Those who use the medication for a longer period can suffer from withdrawal symptoms
after discontinuing the medication which can include: sweating;
fatigue; irritability; stomach cramps; and often panic attacks.
Benzodiazepines frequently are given as a sedative. Some of Benzodiazepines are
Xanax, Klonipin, Valium, and Ativan.
Paradoxical reactions to benzodiazepines, which are an talkativeness, emotional and physical
excitement and, excessive movement, they are uncommon but occur in only about 1%
of patients. Paradoxical reactions remain unclear. Most cases are idiosyncratic;
however, it is thought that they may occur because of a genetics, history of alcohol abuse,
or psychological disorders.
Children and elderly patients may experience paradoxical reactions with benzodiazepines
more often.
Alcohol abusers may be at an increased risk of adverse reactions from benzodiazepines
and as are patients with psychiatric and/or personality disorders especially by those with
psychiatric histories of anger and aggressive behavior.
In bipolar disorder persons mania, hostility, rage and aggressive or impulsive behavior
and often hallucinations can be more pronounced. These adverse effects are rare
but can be very dangerous and are seem most often in children and the elderly
and people with developmental disabilities.
A paradoxical reaction is frightening and uncomfortable. Learn about what these
adverse drug reactions are and how to manage them. A Paradoxical reaction is an
exact opposite an intended effect, the contradictory reaction to a drug.
What can you do about a paradoxical reaction?
If you are at home, you can take a dose of Benadryl to help reverse the anxiety and
restlessness. If you understand what it is and that it is not dangerous, then you could
wait for it to end,or go for a walk until the side effect wears off.
Notify your doctor and ask for a different medication for your original diagnosis,
you cannot take that drug or similar drugs in the same class again.

any physical and emotional changes you experience. Everyone reacts differently to
medications. Be honest with your doctor about side effects your drug is causing.
Ultimately the decision to take any medication is up to you. Continue therapy of it helps.
Medication can control the symptoms but it does not treat the underlying problem.
It is crucial to pursue therapy in your treatment plan. Therapy can help you get to the root
of your problem and develop better coping skills.
